Mayor Hales visits South Africa, speaks on climate change and more

Portland is a member of an elite group -- the C40 Cities Climate Leadership Group. This cohort of the world's major cities works together to take action to reduce greenhouse gas emmisions, address climate risks, and share best practices with each other. While the majority of the C40 cities are megacities -- New York, Seoul, Shanghai, Berlin -- Portland was invited to join the c40 cohort as a gesture recognizing its pioneering measures in the United States to address climate change.

Portland's emphasis on sustainability and practical solutions to problems we face -- a thriving streetcar system, tree planting missions, an active climate action plan, urban growth boundaries -- are not merely rhetoric, as Mayor Hales pointed out.

"We have tens of thousands of people living a true low-carbon lifestyle -- where they walk for most trips and take the streetcar for most others, and hardly ever use their car -- and that result has been noticed by the rest of the country," said Mayor Hales while attending the c40 Cities Mayors Summit in South Africa.
