Apply to serve on PIAC

*Deadline for Applications Extended to October 22, 2014*

Do you want to:

  • Work collaboratively with a body of diverse community members and City staff to affect change?

  • Shape how the City of Portland involves community in government decision making?

  • Contribute to Portland’s growing reputation as a leader in public involvement?

Apply to serve on the City of Portland’s Public Involvement Advisory Council (PIAC)

PIAC was created by Portland City Council in 2008 to increase the consistency and effectiveness of public involvement in City government decision making. It is comprised of 24-34 members and is a balance of community members and City bureau staff.  PIAC reviews current City practices, proposes new policies and guidelines, and creates tools and resources to help City staff engage Portland’s diverse communities in meaningful ways.

PIAC Member Requirements

PIAC Members are expected to attend monthly meetings on the first Tuesday of the month, 5:30 to 8:00 p.m. at City Hall. Participation at workgroup meetings and project work outside of regular monthly meetings is sometimes required. Additional time commitments may entail presenting to City Council or responding to requests as needed.

 Selected Accomplishments

  • City Council adopted Public Involvement Principles developed by PIAC.

  • PIAC developed questions that City bureaus must answer about how public input is considered in the development of all ordinances, resolutions, and reports that go before City Council.

  • PIAC helped to draft new goals and policies for community involvement for Portland’s Comprehensive Plan – a key city policy and planning document for the next 20 years.

  • City Council adopted PIAC's guidelines for community engagement in bureau budget development.

  • PIAC is now helping to shape and is developing a tool to guide implementation of Portland’s Comprehensive Plan.

 Applications

Applications will be accepted through October 22, 2014. Anyone who lives, serves, works, worships, or is enrolled in school in Portland may apply to serve on PIAC. PIAC is committed to diverse representation of the many communities in Portland. Individuals from communities that are underserved or underrepresented in government processes are especially encouraged to apply.
