ONI's Graffiti Abatement Volunteer Program works with concerned neighbors and business-owners to locate, report and remove graffiti from public and private spaces. We work towards accomplishing this goal in several ways:
Research has shown that prompt and persistent removal of graffiti is effective in discouraging repeat vandalism. If you want to help in the city's graffiti abatement efforts, here's what you can do.
Other graffiti prevention activities include:
Volunteer cleanups are typically conducted in targeted areas/neighborhood associations within the City of Portland. These cleanups consist of neighborhood folks, students, and youth who get together to assist in eliminating graffiti using the most appropriate method (environmentally sustainable solvents, scrapers, paints, etc.) in the public right-of-way.
Locations generally include utility poles (to be painted out), backs of street signs, newspaper boxes, bike racks, pay phones, sign poles/city light poles (metal), mailboxes, etc. Cleanups start with an introduction to the materials, and go off in pairs. Cleanups generally last about three hours.
See graffiti in your neighborhood and want to make a difference? Join us at one of our 10 sponsored events this summer!
