2013- Mt. Scott Learning Center

Crime Prevention Coordinator Brad Taylor says:

This year’s recipient has an ongoing commitment to the values that this award celebrates.

The Mt Scott Leaning Center’s Transition Manager, Joshua Mead, first approached me last year to describe his school’s commitment to community service.  He informed me that they were always looking for service projects and asked me to keep them in mind as needs in the community arose.

The first time that I took him up on his offer, I called him and asked if he and his students could help clear a large amount of household trash that had been illegally dumped around an area adjacent to a neighborhood watch that I had recently helped to establish.  Josh and a team of youth showed up and dedicated the better part of a day to cleaning the area.

A few months later, I called Joshua and told him that I had been contacted about several alleys that were full of litter and asked if his student crew may be interested in helping to clean it.  Again, they worked hard and greatly improved the area.

Some time later, a neighbor called me and reported that he suspected that some students from the Mt. Scott Learning Centerwere responsible for graffiti in the surrounding areas.

Instead of becoming defensive, the students and staff became proactive.  Over 15 students from the Mt Scott Learning Center teamed with staff and the neighbor who had called about the graffiti.  Together they cleaned graffiti and removed trash from the most heavily vandalized alleys in the area.  This was a tremendous benefit to both the Mt.Scott-Arletaand the Foster-Powell neighborhoods.

Not only has theMt.ScottLearningCenterproven to be an asset and support the youth and families that they serve, but they have shown that they are a tremendous asset to the neighborhood where they are located.  It is with great appreciation that present the Outstanding Youth Award to the students of the Mt. Scott Learning Center.
