Crime Prevention Coordinator Jenni Pullen says:
Fritz Hirsch is not only a Montavilla neighbor; he is a true public safety advocate. Anyone who knows Fritz knows that livability is extremely important to him. He worked with two different neighborhood taverns to form Good Neighbor Agreements and continues to organize two graffiti clean up events yearly. He helped establish multiple neighborhood watch groups in Montavilla, as well as a Foot Patrol, which is still active, and was instrumental in curbing the overwhelming prostitution activity on the 82nd Avenue of Roses.
Fritz also led an effort to dampen the effects of a nuisance property on 82nd Avenue by working with the owner to make significant changes to the area. The owner ultimately removed an “adult store”, which was a front for prostitution, and then applied Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design principles to the property to make it safer. He installed security lighting, a security door and began a maintenance plan for the grounds. Work on this property continues to this day, thanks to Fritz.
When East Precinct formed the Prostitution Advisory Council under Commander Crebs, it was a natural fit for Fritz to be involved. This effort specifically tackled the crime of prostitution and sought treatment for the victims of the sex industry by getting them into recovery programs. Fritz was instrumental in helping the Prostitution Advisory Council create and write a final report, which was presented to City Council on December 9, 2009. He attended the monthly council meetings and was quite skilled at mediating some difficult discussions.
Fritz has been successful in his endeavors because he searches for long term solutions and does not stop at short term answers. As said by a Crime Prevention Coordinator, Fritz is a joy to work with and truly deserves this recognition for all his efforts.
