Crime Prevention Coordinator William Warren says:
I’d like to invite Robert Leeb, Samantha Kennedy, and Bruce Allen to come forward.
The Station Place Parking Garage is located in thePearl at the corner ofNW Station Way andLovejoy Ct., near the train station. This parking garage defines the standard by which all multi-level parking structures should aspire. This award is presented to Robert Leeb, the project’s architect; Samantha Kennedy, who provided Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design (CPTED) analysis and recommendations; and the Portland Development Commission as the property owners.
CPTED uses the principles of visibility, lighting, architectural design, landscaping and structure placement to discourage criminal behavior and promotes safety. The Station Place Parking Garage incorporates key elements of CPTED throughout the property.
The overall design allows for visibility and natural surveillance, including stairways that are open or have clear glass. The outside landscape and seating areas create public spaces that are inviting not isolating, and ensure that there are always people around to see any activity both inside and outside the garage. Color coded floor identifiers assist users in remembering and finding their correct floor. An attendant and bar gates add the element of physical presence and safety. All of these features increase users’ safety and feeling of security, while discouraging crime.
The Station Place Parking Garage sets a new standard for CPTED design and implementation. When shown photos of the garage, national Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design expert Art Hushen said, “They got it right and did what others are still just discussing.”
