SE Ivon-Madison Green Street project Construction Update 12/4/13

SE Ivon – Madison Green Street Project Construction Update: December 4, 2013

Environmental Services is working on a project to construct thirteen green street planters near SE Ivon and 41st and near SE Madison and 57th. These facilities are designed to remove stormwater from the public sewer system, which reduces the possibility of basement backups into homes and businesses, and sewage overflows onto streets. These facilities also beautify the community and filter and clean stormwater runoff. This project also includes refurbishing two existing green street planters on SE 29th between SE Grant and Harrison.

The project will remove some on-street parking spaces and some street trees to create space for the new stormwater management facilities. Environmental Services will replace street trees removed for the project with trees suited to the location.

Maps and more information can be found on the project website, here: http://www.portlandoregon.gov/bes/article/446272.

DEVELOPMENTS OF NOTE

  • Crews are currently working on several facilities at SE 41st at Clinton, and will continue to work on several adjacent facilities at once for the duration of the project.
  • The next work area will be at SE 41st and Taggart.

CONSTRUCTION SCHEDULE

Construction is ongoing, and will last no more than five months.

WHAT TO EXPECT DURING CONSTRUCTION

  • There will be some traffic disruption as crews are in the area working. Parking within and adjacent to the work site may also be limited.
  • Typical work hours will be 7:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. Monday through Friday. The contractor may schedule work during the same hours on Saturdays.
  • Construction activities may create noise, vibration and dust, and may disrupt normal neighborhood activity.
  • Equipment and materials may be secured and stored on nearby streets overnight.
  • A city construction inspector will be on-site during work hours, and may be able to assist you with construction concerns. Inspectors typically wear a safety vest and hard hat.
  • Bicyclists should be cautious when traveling near construction sites, and should avoid passing through work zones. Detour routes are signed.

GREEN INFRASTRUCTURE

Stormwater runoff can affect water quality in rivers and streams. Portland uses green streets, ecoroofs, trees and other green infrastructure to increase sewer system efficiency, and protect water quality, public health, and the environment. Green infrastructure keeps stormwater out of the sewer system, filters pollutants, provides habitat and increases neighborhood green space for healthier watersheds. Environmental Services builds green infrastructure throughout the city.

TABOR TO THE RIVER

This project is part of the Tabor to the River Program, which combines innovative stormwater management techniques with sewer repairs and improvements to stop basement flooding, manage stormwater more naturally, and to restore watershed health. The program area extends from Mr. Tabor to the Willamette River between SE Hawthorne and SE Powell boulevards.

Working for clean rivers

Over one-third of Portland’s 2,500 miles of sewer pipes are more than 80 years old. Portland combines sewer improvements that replace or repair Portland’s aging sewer pipes with green streets, ecoroofs, trees and other green infrastructure to increase sewer system efficiency, and protect water quality, public health and the environment. Green infrastructure keeps stormwater out of the sewer system, filters pollutants, provides habitat and increases neighborhood green space for healthier watersheds.
