Open house and Planning Commission set for Sauvie Island/Multnomah Channel planning project

Friday, 12/20/13 - 5:02 pm

Contacts:

Kevin Cook, Land Use Planner, 503-988-3043, Ext. 26782

Joanna Valencia, AICP, Senior Transportation Planner, 503-988-3043 Ext. 29637

The public is invited to an open house for the Sauvie Island/Multnomah Channel Rural Area Plan and Transportation System Plan update. The open house will be on Monday, January 6 from 5:30 to 7 p.m. at the Sauvie Island Academy Gym, 14445 NW Charlton Road.

The open house will be followed by a regular meeting of the Multnomah County Planning Commission. The planning commission meeting will include a briefing and discussion about the planning effort and time for public comment. No decisions will be made at the meeting.

The open house will provide an update on the planning project, which began earlier this year, and will include a visioning station where the public can share ideas about what constitutes the rural character that citizens hope to preserve.

The two plans will inform area policies, zoning code updates, and transportation improvements for a 20-plus-year planning horizon.

Two committees are assisting Multnomah County with preparing the plan. A Technical Advisory Committee of agency staff provide information and resources to a Community Advisory Committee (CAC). The CAC will make policy recommendations to the Multnomah County Planning Commission, which in turn will recommend policies to the Board of County Commissioners.

The two committees are reviewing issues that community members have identified, including activities and events on farm land, crowding on rural road, and regulatory challenges facing moorages and marinas. The CAC and the project team are scheduled to develop a draft plan update by the summer of 2014, which will be presented to the Planning Commission and the Board of County Commissioners. Adoption of a final plan will occur after public hearings of both bodies.

Multnomah County is the local planning authority for the portions of Sauvie Island and the Multnomah Channel within the county. For more information, visit the project website: https://multco.us/simc-planning. Email questions and comments to:simcplanning@multco.us.
