NE Cleveland and N Shaver Green Street Project
Construction Starting Soon
January 15, 2014
Environmental Services is designing a green street project at the corner of NE Cleveland and N Shaver (see map). The single green street planter will remove about 132,000 gallons of stormwater from the sewer system every year.
A project map can be found here: https://www.portlandoregon.gov/bes/article/477846
City crews are scheduled to start working the week of January 20th. Work should last about three to four weeks. For a short time there will be some work in NE Shaver, which may require a lane closure.
WHAT IS A GREEN STREET?
Green streets are planters that collect stormwater runoff from streets and allow water to soak into the ground as soil and plants filter pollutants. Green streets keep stormwater out of the sewer system, replenish groundwater supplies and add green space to neighborhoods. Environmental Services builds green streets throughout the city.
After construction, the city will plant this new green street with low-growing vegetation adaptable to a variety of conditions. City maintenance crews will visit the facility about four times a year to remove any debris and to weed, water and replace plants if needed. The city welcomes help from neighbors with weeding, watering (especially during hot weather), removing litter and keeping the inlet free of leaves and debris.
