2014- Dave Hillman

Crime Prevention Coordinator Katherine Anderson writes:

Dave Hillman is a volunteer extraordinaire! Dave is not only passionate about public safety and community service, but he is extremely generous with his time and talent.  His involvement and leadership in any project has consistently served as a recipe for its success.

Dave has been involved with the Mt. Tabor Foot Patrol since the initial training in 2000.  Dave became the leader of the group and opened up his home for the monthly foot patrol meetings.  The foot patrol flourished under Dave’s leadership, completing 2,754 patrols and contributing over 23,000 volunteer hours in the first 10 years.  The Mt. Tabor Foot Patrol has actively participated in the “Concerts in the Park” summer series and at numerous other public functions on Mt. Tabor.  After 10 years, Dave found wonderful volunteers, Beau and Nancy Russell, to lead the group and the foot patrol remains successful with over 60 active members.

Apart from his leadership on the foot patrol, Dave was a co-founder and chairperson for “Friends of Mt. Tabor Park”, a non-profit organization dedicated to park maintenance and improvements.  For over seven years, Dave devoted countless hours to growing and expanding the organization, which now has over 160 members.

When Dave stepped down from the “Friends” leadership, he was already working on a new project, namely, the development of a Visitor Center in Mt. Tabor Park.  Dave was successful in advocating for the Center, which was sited and built based on his recommendations in 2011.  Since its opening, the Visitor Center has welcomed more than 14,000 people from around the country and the world.  Dave has recruited a cadre of neighborhood volunteers to staff the center, and established a community service partnership with Central Catholic High School.

Dave has been a tremendous help to the Crime Prevention Program in at least two capacities: he serves on the Crime Prevention Advisory Group, and ten years ago, he provided input on the overhaul of our Community Foot Patrol manual. His advice led us to make the Foot Patrol program easier and more fun for participants.

Dave also is involved with the Southeast Precinct Citizens Advisory Council and currently serves as Co-Chair with Bill Markwart.  Since 1986, the Advisory Council has sponsored the annual Officer Appreciation Day and BBQ and has raised thousands of dollars for the Portland Police Bureau to acquire K-9 partners for the officers. In addition, Dave served as one of two community advisors on the Portland Police Bureau patrol redistricting committee in 2007.

Whew! Now, the only question that remains is what and where is Dave’s next project?
