Disability NEWS returning in March

Disability NEWS set to publish in March

The Disability NEWS is returning to publication and will be providing news and information to Portland’s disability community. Readers will again read informative articles about meetings, events, workshops, services, and resources. The format will also include feature articles of human interest, developments for accessibility, new services and other news related to people with disabilities.

The NEWS welcomes submissions for publication from community members to help continue its broad outreach of information in Portland. Events, workshops, trainings, new services and resources are just a few topics that people are eager to know more about. It is suggested that the information be submitted a month in advance, if possible, to offer enough time to be published and read by the subscribers. It is also helpful to provide clear information following the Five W’s (who, what, when, where and why) and follow up contact information. The reports in the NEWS are generally kept brief, so links to further information are also helpful to include. Submissions and subscription requests should be sent to

Nickole Cheron, Disability Coordinator at the City’s Office of Neighborhood Involvement, is pleased provide the NEWS to the community. “Over the past five years, the Disability NEWS has reached a large number of people and organizations, providing useful information that served its community. Feedback from the community noted a vacancy regarding information and communication without the NEWS. I am happy to see its return and continue to be a strong communication hub for people with disabilities.”

The NEWS will return to its semimonthly electronic newsletter distribution in March. It will also be posted on ONI’s Disability Program website, the Disability Facebook page and will be available as an accessible pdf to download. Feature articles will be briefs in the newsletter with direct links to the complete article on the website, allowing the use of graphics and photographs. To further extend accessibility, future plans are to explore providing an additional format as e-pub documents which will allow for downloading to e-readers, computers, tablets and smart phones.
