Adaptive & Inclusive Recreation (AIR)

Offering community-based recreation activities and leisure services specially designed for children, teens, and adults who have a disability and/or special needs. Our services are designed to assist people in developing and using their leisure time in ways that enhance their health, well-being, and independence.

How to Participate
If you are interested in learning more about the Adaptive and Inclusive Recreation (AIR) program, please review the catalog below. When you find an activity that you would like to participate in, call the AIR staff at 503-823-4328 to register. You can also email the program staff, whose information in on the left side of this page. Pre-registration is not required for the monthly dance or the weekly bowling program.

AIR Staff
Our staff has a wide variety of experience working with people who have special needs. Direct service staff have experience in community recreation, education, or clinical settings. Many staff have college degrees, including therapeutic recreation, social work, school counseling, and human resources management.

About the Program
Formerly known as Disabled Citizens Recreation, this program was started in 1964, and is considered one of the top specialized community recreation programs in the United States. The AIR program serves people of all ages and types of special needs at sites throughout the city, including Portland Parks & Recreation's community centers and community schools. Participants need not live in Portland to participate in AIR programs; however, non-Portland residents pay a slightly higher fee.
