Portland Parks & Recreation, Harper's Playground, Parks Commissioner Amanda Fritz, and community partners including Gateway Area Business Association, joined neighbors to celebrate the groundbreaking of Gateway Discovery Park on Saturday, May 7. Construction is now underway, with an estimated park opening in fall of 2017.

Harper’s Playground committed to raising the funds to make the new Gateway Discovery Park the site of Portland’s next inclusive, barrier-free playground: the second in the City of Portland. The non-profit group participated on Project Advisory Committee and advised on inclusive design. The committee and the community were very committed to creating a play area that supported the participation of ALL children.
“The name ‘Gateway Discovery Park’ invokes the same exciting sense of adventure that awaits in our entire neighborhood,” says Linda Sanchez, a member of the park’s naming committee. “GABA – the Gateway Area Business Association – shares the excitement of east Portland neighbors for the amazing new gathering space coming soon. It will really be a gateway into Gateway!”
Gateway Park & Urban Plaza will be a new 3.2 acre neighborhood park located on the corner of NE Halsey and NE 106th. The Master Planning process of 2010 outlined some important features including a programmed urban plaza, green space, inclusive nature playground, skate dot and picnic area.The park will contribute to the Gateway Eco-district and provide public amenities that are currently lacking in the Hazelwood, Mill Park, and Woodland Park neighborhoods.

In 2008, the Portland Development Commission (PDC) and Portland Parks & Recreation (PP&R) purchased three adjacent properties totaling 4.2 acres. PDC and PP&R currently share joint title of the parcels. Based on community input and previous planning efforts, it was determined that the now-vacant site should become a three-acre neighborhood park with one-acre of complementary mixed-use development led by PDC.
The Gateway community has long desired a public gathering space to cherish and enjoy in the heart of the neighborhood. The Gateway Neighborhood Park project will promote and reinforce the identity of Gateway as a family friendly, multi-generational, and multi-cultural place to live and work.
