Produce for People Program

Our Produce for People (PFP) program, which sprouted in 1995 to combat Portland's high poverty rate, is a grassroots effort in which community gardeners turn their ability to produce food into an opportunity to fulfill the needs of the hungry. In concert with hunger relief agencies, the program seeks to provide Portland's emergency food shelters with fresh, nutritious, organic, locally grown food. Contact the Community Gardens Office to inquire if there is an existing Produce for People program at your garden site.

Produce Donations
In 2013, we had an ambitious goal of increasing donations from 20,000 lbs. to 30,000 lbs. The final citywide tally has been calculated! In 2012, 26 community garden sites donated 20,337 lbs. of produce to 17 different food pantries. This year, 38 community garden sites donated 36,545 lbs. of produce to 30 different food pantries. That’s a 46% increase in garden site participation, 80% increase in produce donations and a 76% increase in food pantry partnerships!  Check out the detailed list of citywide donation information. Thank you to everyone who helped us reach our goal!

Produce for People (PFP) Coordinator
The PFP Coordinator works with the site volunteer Garden Manager to coordinate a food donation program at their garden. They communicate opportunities to fellow gardeners, build relationships with recipient agencies, coordinate produce collection and deliveries, recruit volunteers, and record donations. See the position description for details.

If you are interested in becoming a Produce for People Coordinator at your garden site, please contact your volunteer Garden Manager or Rodney Bender at or call 503-823-6745.

How to Choose a Partner Agency
Gardeners choose the recipient of their PFP donations. Each garden must coordinate pick-ups or deliveries with the recipient of their choice. Please see the list of food banks giving out food boxes in Multnomah County.
