Evening - Trees Talk - Lecture
Event Types > Community Events > Family Event
The main theme for the month is Heritage Trees—visit them, photograph them, let them inspire you. Let the Heritage Tree Booklet (available online) help you identify particular trees and their urban history. Consult the Portland Parks and Recreation webpage for a full listing of events.
On Thursday, April 11, Judy BlueHorse Skelton, PSU faculty, will speak to Native Trees: Native Heritage at the Native American Student and Community Center. Last week, we had a preview of Judy's perspective during a tour of the Native American Center’s garden eco-roof. In that tour she connected the cedar trees to tribal heritage and the site. She also spoke to the use and purpose of the building, the continuing efforts to revive the landscape, and the many voices who influenced and guided the site and building design, such as the Nez Pierce landscape architect, Brian McCormick, and the artist Lillian Pitt. Her reference to the place given to tribal elders voices in what knowledge should be communicated about particular plants ( and how and when) raises interesting questions about what heritage means.
Judy’s talk will be in the Central Hall of the Native American Center (710 SW Jackson St.Portland, OR97201) from 6:30-8:00 pm. The Urban Forestry Commission Education and Outreach Committee and the Urban Forestry Division want to thank the student Environmental Club at PSU for co-sponsoring this event.
