8,000 trees and counting!

Greetings Inventory volunteers!

As we are nearing the halfway point in this summer’s Tree Inventory workdays, we thought you would all like to hear about the progress we’ve made. After all, this project would not be possible without the hard work and enthusiasm of volunteers like you!

With 13 of 32 workdays completed, we have mapped, measured, and assessed over 8000 trees of 102 species! Maples make up a remarkable yet unsurprising 28 percent of what we have counted so far, so if you aren’t already an expert at identifying maple species, just come to a few more workdays and you soon will be! Most importantly, 226 volunteers from around the region have donated their time and energy to this project thus far. Whether collecting data at one of our neighborhood workdays or individually as homework, offering professional expertise as an arborist, or entering trees into the GIS database at ourDeltaPark office, this project has been a volunteer-led team effort!

While some of our smaller neighborhoods are nearly finished, others are just getting started and will need all the help they can get for the remainder of the summer. If you are planning on registering for more workdays, please choose one of the following neighborhoods:Richmond,Woodstock, Downtown, Piedmont, orPortsmouth. See the table below for registration links and information. If you are unable to attend more workdays but still want to help, let us know! We can arrange to have you check-out a section or two to complete on your own time.

Thank you all again for all the work you have done thus far—at its heart, the Tree Inventory Project is a grassroots, volunteer-driven effort that will shape the way Portland’s urban forest is managed now and in the future. We can’t do it without you!

Feel free to contact us if you have any questions or are interested in learning about more ways to get involved in the Tree Inventory Project.

Sincerely,

The Tree Inventory Team

Jeff, Jeremy, Shannan, Danielle, and Angie
