In the late 1980s, Reynolds, a Portland native, retired psychologist, artist and ardent tree lover, turned her considerable focus and energy to finding notable trees. Encouraged by friends and other advocates, she checked out suggested specimens and, in the process, began noticing others. Pretty soon she started recording those that had something to recommend them, whether it was size, history, beauty or rarity. "There's plenty to see, Reynolds says. We have been kind to our trees," Reynolds writes about Portland in the new edition, "many in this book are over 100 years old, far exceeding their expected life span."
Take a historical tree tour of the beautiful Laurelhurst park with Portland's very own Tree Celebrity, Phyllis Reynolds.
