(Portland, OR) –
Portland Parks & Recreation (PP&R) welcomes volunteers to take part in the Powell Butte Eco-Blitz, a scientific survey of the wildlife found in PP&R’s 612-acre Powell Butte Nature Park. This is a free event, open to all ages.
The event is coordinated by PP&R in partnership with the Johnson Creek Watershed Council and is a program of the US National Park Service. Scientists and volunteers of all ages and backgrounds work together to compile a snapshot of eco-diversity, in a fun and exciting one-day event.
WHAT: Take part in the Powell Butte Eco-Blitz! Help count wildlife numbers and species in our area.
WHERE: Powell Butte Nature Park, 16160 SE Powell Blvd.
WHEN: Saturday, May 21, 2016. Opportunities from 7am-4pm
WHY: To survey amphibians, butterflies and birds and help contribute to the scientific knowledge of Portland’s ecological diversity. The event is coordinated by PP&R in partnership with the Johnson Creek Watershed Council and is a program of the US National Park Service.
“We know we have a wide variety of wildlife who make their home in parks and natural areas like Powell Butte,” says Portland Parks & Recreation Director Mike Abbaté. “This eco-blitz is a wonderful chance to learn more about what animals are there, their numbers, and to foster education about the importance of protecting them. I hope our neighbors are as excited as I am about this fun and important volunteer opportunity!”
PP&R will be conducting three different species surveys at Powell Butte: one each for amphibians, butterflies and birds. Volunteers choose a time slot where they will go out in a group with an expert to conduct a survey to monitor their designated species. No experience is necessary! The event is free and open to all ages. Volunteers should arrive at least 15 minutes before their chosen time slot.
