Shelly Hunter manages fundraising for Portland Parks & Recreation (PP&R), and has led that work since 2014. PP&R’s development work focuses on expanding the collaborative efforts of PP&R, its partners, and other community based groups to increase equitable access to the parks. Shelly began her career as a grants administrator at the City of Savannah, and was instrumental in creating the operational tools and vision that produced a strong portfolio of arts programs that supported strategic goals for economic and community development. She has contributed her fundraising and managerial expertise on several non-profit/advisory boards, including Georgia Council for the Arts and United Way of Savannah. Her career is connected by a commitment to enfolding the aspirations and the skills of groups and individuals into a shared vision for community. Shelly holds a MPA from Valdosta State University.
Jamie Snider has a Master of Science in Management Communication from the University of Portland and a Bachelor of Arts in Communications from Wheaton College. Jamie quickly discovered a passion for fundraising at her first nonprofit job with Big Brothers Big Sisters of Metro Portland in 2001- and has never looked back. She is a member of the Leadership Transitions Team at NAO, serving in both Interim Executive Director and Interim Development Director roles, and is the principal consultant and owner of Snider Consulting. Jamie’s been fundraising for 15 years—and a storyteller since she learned her first words.
Steve Pixley graduated University of Oregon, B.F.S. (Before Football Success). He’s been Volunteer Program coordinator at PP&R, which is the best job in the City, for 20 years. He sees his job as one who helps colleagues at the finest park system in the nation, blend volunteers into their team. He has the privilege of being Park’s liaison to Oregon Rail Heritage Foundation and works closely with several friends groups. He has experience managing volunteers for political campaigns, schools and civic groups. Current volunteer duties include coaching, leading a Sunday school class and lifting, toting and litter patrol at community events. He is vice chair of Oregon Volunteer Commission, a 15-year member of Northwest Oregon Volunteer Administrators Association, and a lapsed “Certified Volunteer Administrator”. Depending on the day, his favorite quote is either “Planners build cities, volunteers build community” or “Just be yourself’ is about the worst advice you can give some people.”
Alexis Millett manages NAO’s Rural Programs and Helpline and Resources Hub, and has a deep appreciation and commitment to empowering small organizations and the communities they serve through inclusive, mindful, and strength-based approaches. Through a partnership with the Ford Institute for Community Building, Alexis managers and delivers capacity building workshops that support the development of leaders, organizations, and communities around Oregon. Prior to her work at NAO, Alexis managed projects for a real estate start-up company in Seattle that specialized in community-oriented design and was deeply engaged in youth development work throughout undergraduate and graduate school. She conducted her master’s research around the use of hip-hop recording studios in youth organizations located in Worcester, MA. She has a Master of Arts in Community Development and Planning with a focus on Youth Development from Clark University.
Art Hendricks serves as the Equity and Inclusion Manager for Portland Parks & Recreation and has over 25 years of experience working in the field of diversity development, equity and/or inclusion that spans the private, non-profit and public sectors. His experience includes developing marketing and public participation processes designed to increase the involvement of communities of color in City programs and decision making processes and working with key stakeholders to develop policy and culturally specific programs that increase access and improve outcomes for youth and families of color.
Currently, Mr. Hendricks is responsible for the Equity and Inclusion Office for PP&R. The Equity and Inclusion team is responsible for assisting PP&R develop culturally responsive programs and activities, expand outreach and engagement for underrepresented communities, communities of color, immigrant and refugee communities, and people living with disabilities.
Karen Guillen-Chapman is the community engagement coordinator for Portland Parks & Recreation, and focuses her efforts on increasing access to the bureau’s services and facilities for underrepresented communities, building staff capacity towards greater inclusiveness and working on equity and access initiatives in the bureau’s strategic plan. Karen’s prior work included City of Gresham’s Department of Environmental services, where she led outreach initiatives to increase awareness about resource conservation and recycling issues in the community as the City’s recycling coordinator, and work with Metro’s Solid Waste & Recycling division and with Hacienda CDC in the Cully Neighborhood. She is passionate about connecting and empowering communities towards authentic civic engagement.
Sara Curiel Paez is an experienced bilingual and bicultural organizational development consultant. She was born and raised in Nayarit, Mexico. She attended Oregon State University and received her B.S. degree from the Honors College department. She was a McNair Scholar and has a Master’s degree in Public Policy from Oregon State. Sara has worked throughout rural Oregon as a trainer and facilitator on a variety of topics including leadership development, project management, and organizational development. She has extensive experienced developing curriculum for the Latino community. She is a certified MBTI trainer. Internationally, Sara has worked and studied in Spain, Bulgaria and Mexico. Sara lived in Miami, Florida where she owned and managed a small orchids business. She is excited about establishing her own leadership development and cultural competency consulting business.
