The property was owned for many years by the Van Alstyne family. In the late 1970s, a plant nursery was established and operated for 20 years until the site was acquired by the city of Portland in 1998.

A master plan for the park was completed in August 2000 and construction began in September 2003. Several community partners contributed toward the park's development, including Nike, Oregon State Parks & Recreation, Portland Parks & Recreation, Portland Office of Transportation, and the Bureau of Maintenance. The community participated in a dedication ceremony during Neighbor’s Night Out on August 3, 2004.
