The National Weather Service is promoting June 24-30, 2012 as Lightning Safety Awareness Week. The theme is "When Thunder Roars, Go Indoors!" Around the U.S. hundreds of people are permanently injured each year by lightning. Although less common in Oregon than some parts of the country, lightning still poses a danger in the Portland area and should be treated seriously. Someone was struck by lightning in Forest Park as recently as June of this year.

If you hear thunder, you are likely within striking distance of the storm. The best way to protect yourself from lightning is to avoid the threat. You simply don't want to be caught outside in a storm. Have a lightning safety plan and cancel or postpone activities early if thunderstorms are expected.
