Section 8 Bill Heard Today

Section 8 HearingOregon Speaker of the House Tina Kotek has introduced a bill in the current legislative session that would prevent landlords from denying rental applications from renters using public rent assistance.

The bill was heard at 3 p.m. today before the House Committee on Human Services and Housing.

Under current law, landlords are allowed to deny applications based solely on a prospective renter’s source of income. This has increased the difficulty for renters using Housing Choice Vouchers (commonly referred to as Section 8) and other public assistance to find healthy, safe places to live. By requiring that landlords simply accept applications from all renters, Rep. Kotek’s proposal would increase the ability of low-income renters to find a home where they can thrive.

Commissioner Nick Fish and Portland Housing Advocacy Commission (PHAC) members Deborah Imse and Marc Jolin (pictured) were among those who testified in favor of the bill.
