Portland Housing Bureau offers a mighty congratulations to REACH for winning the competitive MetLife Foundation Award, demonstrating excellence in connecting seniors to health care and supportive services at Walnut Park.
Because of the incredible outcomes they achieve for the people who call Walnut Park home, we particularly want to highlight the connections REACH initiated, including partnerships with places like the Urban League, Meals on Wheels, the Oregon Food Bank, Northwest Pilot Project, Visiting Nurses Association and others, where residents can receive case management, on-site nursing care, classes on affordable food shopping and health cooking and much more.
Walnut Park is a great way for seniors and communities of color to stay in this changing inner Northeast neighborhood for a long time. The engagement with the rich cultural assets of this community ensures that low-income earning seniors have a place to live that includes public transit as well as the services and activities that this vibrant community provides.
Walnut Park is one of the Portland Housing Bureau’s 11X13 Housing Preservation properties. That means that it nearly lost its affordability with the pending expiration of the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development’s (HUD) mortgage and rent assistance contract. In the campaign, a City investments of $22 million in development funds leveraged $110 million in private investments and more than $120 million in federal assistance over the next 20 years.
Together with our partners, particularly REACH, Portland Housing Bureau helped Walnut Park remain affordable for the next 60 years.
Gabriella Steele is one of the residents we featured as part of the 11X13 Housing Preservation campaign. She has lived at Walnut Park for 12 years. Gabriella told us that if her home had lost its affordability, she would have nowhere else to go. At Walnut Park, she can maintain her independence and continue doing the things that she loves—painting, cooking and gardening. Gabriella and her neighbors are the reason we do what we do at the Portland Housing Bureau and we're grateful for the strong partnerships of award-winning industry leaders like REACH.
