GirlStrength is a free violence prevention program offered through the Family Services Division of the Portland Police Bureau. Designed to meet the developmental needs of girls 10-17 years of age, GirlStrength shares the same philosophy as its sister program, WomenStrength, and offers holistic self-defense classes and personal safety workshops throughout the city of Portland. Since 2008, GirlStrength has trained approximately 4,000 girls in personal safety and violence prevention techniques.
In December 2013, Portland City Council approved funding for the Portland Police Bureau to pilot a boy's violence prevention and education program in 2014. The mission of the BoyStrength program will be to foster awareness, redefine masculinity, and encourage boys to be leaders in nonviolence. For more information on the program, including in-depth goals and volunteer opportunities, click here.
Volunteers needed! If you are interested in helping us teach young boys about nonviolence and self-awareness, please fill out this application by May 1st.
