The Traffic Division is charged with the specific duties of traffic enforcement, serious injury accident investigation, fatal accident investigations, and major traffic crime investigations. Traffic complaints generated by citizens are also handled by the Division, with our Enhanced Vehicle Safety Enforcement Program detail taking the lead in this arena.
The Traffic Division as a whole also handles numerous Community Events including but not limited to, Parades, Community Marches and Demonstrations, Dignitary Motorcades, and sponsored Runs and Walks. For the calendar year 1998, we handled 61 Community Events. In years when there is a Presidential Campaign, this number rises according to the number of Candidates that visit Portland.
Enhanced Vehicle Safety Enforcement Program (EVSEP)
The Portland Police Bureau is proud of our Enhanced Vehicle Safety Enforcement Program. This innovative program continues to respond directly to community/neighborhood traffic complaints. This program is a proactive approach to interdict errant drivers, respond to neighborhood traffic complaints in a systematic manner and increase neighborhood safety and livability. In order to enhance the effectiveness of this program, the EVSEP Officers work closely with the remaining Traffic Division Enforcement Officers, Photo Radar Officers, Precinct Neighborhood Response Teams, Bureau of Traffic Management, and citizens throughout the city. Some of the equipment involved in this effort includes handheld radar guns, hand held laser guns, photo radar, and speed monitoring carts (SMART wagons).
