Safety Zone: Cops Talk is a program that teaches personal safety, crime prevention and police awareness to adults with developmental disabilities through a 26 lesson curriculum.  It is designed to be taught by a uniformed law enforcement officer with a civilian co-trainer.

People with developmental disabilities can be vulnerable to crime and exploitation and may become unwitting partners in criminal activity. They may:

  • Trust others too quickly in an effort to make friends.
  • Comply with exploitative requests or demands out of fear, intimidation, habit, or lack of knowledge.
  • Be dependent on others for help with money management or personal care, and fear losing that support if they report any exploitation or abuse.
  • Be isolated in their community and unable to access resources for help.

This comprehensive personal safety and crime prevention curriculum can be combined and sequenced according to students' needs.
