Recruitment in other states
Since 2010, the Portland Police Bureau has annually travelled out-of-state as part of our efforts to further increase the racial diversity of our organization. We have held very successful out-of-state recruitments in Southern and Northern California locations where the applicant pool is more diverse. Although we do not have any set plans yet, our next out-of-state recruitment will likely be in the Midwest region of the United States.
Traveling to Portland to Test
In addition to our out-of-state recruitments we invite qualified applicants to travel to Portland to take part in a local recruitment. Generally, candidates will need to travel to Portland twice during the hiring process.
The first trip will include initial testing and oral interview. Several months later, after receiving a Conditional Offer of Hire, applicants will return to take the Psychological and Medical Exams (Phases 5 and 6).
We have a travel assistance and moving expense reimbursement program available for qualifying candidates who live more than 100 miles away from Portland.
Initial testing and interview schedule:
Saturday: Phase 1 (Written Test) and Phase 2 (Physical Ability Test)
Sunday: Most traveling applicants use the Sunday to explore the city. (See Relocation information)
Monday - Thursday*: Phase 3 (Oral Interview)
* We do our best to schedule all out-of-town interviews for Monday, however, on a rare occasion a large numbers of out-of-town applicants may require some interviews to be held on Tuesday morning.
This assistance is available to applicants who live more than 100 miles away from Portland.
After a candidate receives a Conditional Offer of Hire, the Bureau may pay for reasonable travel expenses to Portland to take the Psychological and Medical tests. If the candidate is hired, this assistance will reduce the amount available later for relocation reimbursement. If the applicant is NOT hired, or is hired but elects not to live in Portland, this travel assistance need not be repaid.
Once hired, new officers are eligible for up to $2,500 (less previous travel assistance) in relocation expense reimbursement from the City of Portland if:
1.) the new officer moves to a residence within the Portland city limits and
2.) is able to provide receipts for all expenses.
Out-of-state applicants will receive detailed information and the paperwork needed for travel assistance and relocation expense reimbursements from their assigned background investigator later in the process.
