In the early morning of September 3, 1983, at approximately 3:10 am, Derreck Sherman, a 17-year-old African-American male, was walking across the parking lot of the Knickerbocker Motel on the 4700 block on N Interstate Avenue with an associate when a loud noise was heard. The associate looked over to Derreck to see him on the ground bleeding from a gunshot. Derreck was transported to Emanuel Hospital where he died a short time later.
Derreck Sherman had led a trying life and was living in a foster home at the time of his murder. The day before his death he played basketball, went to a party, had gone downtown, and returned to the motel to sleep.
An unidentified white male was seen a short time prior to the shooting. He was described as 18 to 23 years of age, being 5 feet 9 inches to 5 feet 11 inches tall with sandy brown hair and a mustache wearing an army fatigue jacket with blue jeans. Witnesses reported seeing a yellow 1979 Chevrolet Camaro fleeing the scene.
