On the morning of January 3, 1980, the caregiver and landlord of Myrtle Thomas went downstairs at 2743 N. Kerby Avenue to check on Ms. Thomas after an anonymous, disturbing phone call. The caregiver found Myrtle, an 82-year-old African-American female, lying on the floor of her bedroom, deceased. The caregiver then called a friend who called police. An autopsy revealed that Myrtle Thomas had died from multiple stab wounds.
Myrtle Thomas led a reclusive lifestyle and had no known family. She had no known criminal record. There was no sign of forced entry or evidence of a robbery. A young neighbor witnessed a white male with long, blonde hair and a full beard sitting on the victim’s steps the evening before Ms. Thomas had died.
