Case #86-125467

On December 6, 1986, at approximately 7:30 pm, four unidentified young women came to the door of a resident on the 2800 block of NE Davis Street and told her that there was a man sleeping on the sidewalk in front of her house. When the resident did not see the man move, she called police. Police arrived and discovered that James Whitacre, a 63-year-old white man, was unconscious and non-responsive. He was transported to a nearby hospital where surgery was performed in an attempt to treat his traumatic head injuries. Mr. Whitacre passed away 14 days later on December 20, due to his injuries.

James Whitacre was a known alcoholic who frequented bars in southwest and southeast Portland. According to those who knew him, Mr. Whitacre had no known enemies and lived with a roommate near where he was found. Mr. Whitacre was not known to befriend individuals in bars when he was drinking and had been drinking the night of his murder.
