On June 16, 1987, residents in the apartment complex at 230 NE 100th Avenue became concerned for another resident after they had not heard from them in some time. The owner of the apartments entered the apartment of Jose Martinez, a 29-year-old Hispanic man, and discovered him appearing to be dead. The police were called and it was determined Mr. Martinez had died due to blunt force trauma.
Jose Martinez was a waiter at a local Mexican restaurant who was reported to be user and small time dealer of cocaine. He was a self-admitted bisexual who was described as being friendly, flirtatious, and liked to party with both men and women in his apartment. Witnesses reported hearing odd noises between 8:00 and 10:00 the previous morning.
