On the night of July 28, 2001, at approximately 11:50 pm at the intersection of SE 82nd Avenue and Powell, shots were fired into a white minivan traveling southbound on 82nd and struck the occupants inside. A short time later, the victims arrive at a nearby hospital where one, Pedro Francisco Valenzuela, a 19-year-old Hispanic man, was pronounced dead as a result from the gunshot wounds sustained during the shooting. The other individual who had been shot survived.
Mr. Valenzuela was known to police and he was reported to be an 18th Street gang member. Witnesses report the shooter was in the vehicle directly behind the minivan and describe the shooter as being a Hispanic man in his early 20’s with short hair. The vehicle has been described as an early 1990’s model 4-door SUV.
