On May 5, 1991, neighbors in the 4950 block of N. Kerby Avenue reported hearing a gunshot at approximately 3:15 in the morning. After hearing the gunshot, neighbors then went out to investigate. Edward “Ed” James Black, a 50-year old African-American man, was found lying in the street bleeding heavily. Mr. Black soon died at the scene as a result of the wounds he sustained during the shooting.
Edward Black was well known in the area and was reported to have been living out of his van in the neighborhood during the weeks prior to the shooting. Mr. Black was reported to have abused alcohol and to have been belligerent when drinking in excess.
Witnesses reported seeing an older model white two-door Chevrolet Impala driving away from the scene. Police are considering this may be a gang-related shooting.
