January 20, 2011 15:41The 2nd Annual Peninsula Portland Police Z-Man Wrestling Tournament is scheduled for this Saturday, January 22, 2011, at Grant High School from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Grant High School is located at 2245 Northeast 36th Avenue. The tournament will feature hundreds of local young wrestlers, their families, police officers and business leaders. Last year, more than 360 wrestlers, 30 volunteer Portland Police Officers, city officials and 600 spectators enjoyed the event. The tournament is the culmination of community leaders, local businesses and Portland Police Officers coming together to provide a safe environment for kids to interact and compete.
The Z-Man Wrestling Tournament supports the mission of the Z-Man Foundation, which was established in 2009 to build upon the work and goodwill that the late Officer Mark Zylawy provided to the community for more than 17 years. Officer Zylawy was killed on his way to work on January 27, 2008. The Foundation provides scholarship opportunities for local youth to attend local college prep high schools. After only two years in operation, the Foundation has supported 14 students due largely to police officers' support through payroll deductions.
Pre-registration for wrestlers is $15, on-site is $20. To register, visit trackwrestling.com. General admission is $2. All proceeds, including the admission and registration will go to the Foundation. Donations to the Z-Man Scholarship Fund can be made online at zmanscholarship.org.
