60-year-old Steven Lee Wright was arrested in connection with yesterday's bank robbery at the Sterling Savings Bank branch located at 4728 Northeast Sandy Boulevard.
Wright entered the bank and demanded money from the teller. Wright did not display a weapon during the robbery.
A witness to the bank robbery followed Wright and called 9-1-1, providing a description and location information for officers to contact and arrest him. The witness told 9-1-1 that the suspect changed clothes after the robbery, which greatly helped officers locate the suspect in the neighborhood.
Upon his arrest, Wright had in his possession several weapons, including a handgun, pepper spray, a stun gun, brass knuckles and knives.
Investigators determined that Wright had been a fugitive since October 1983 from Michigan, where he was wanted for a parole violation.
Detectives believe that Wright has been in the Portland area for several months and likely was living under a false identity.
Anyone who recognizes Wright, perhaps by another name, or has information about his whereabouts in Portland or other parts of the United States is asked to contact Detective Brett Hawkinson at (503) 823-1080 or Brett.Hawkinson@PortlandOregon.gov
