Early Monday April 30, 2012, at 4:32 a.m., Portland Police officers assigned to Central Precinct responded to the report of a sexual assault at the Plaid Pantry, located at 735 Southeast 12th Avenue.
A witness on the phone with 9-1-1 was following the suspect on foot and was providing location updates for officers. The suspect was located at Southeast 8th Avenue and Taylor Street where he was taken in to custody. The suspect was armed with a knife at the time of his arrest.
Officers learned that the suspect, 64-year-old Ronald Steven Pickett, entered the store and forced the 20-year-old female employee into the back room at knife point, where the suspect sexually assaulted her. Another customer came into the store, which allowed the victim to escape the back room. The suspect then left the store and was followed by the witness.
Pickett was charged with Sodomy in the First Degree, Sex Abuse in the First Degree, Unlawful Sexual Penetration in the First Degree, Kidnapping in the First Degree, Robbery in the First Degree, Attempted Assault in the First Degree, and Coercion.
Pickett was booked into the Multnomah County Jail and bail is set at $1,525,000. He will be arraigned on Tuesday.
