The Portland Police Bureau is working jointly with the Oregon Department of Human Services (DHS) to identify three very young children who were found in a shed this morning, May 24, 2012, and were taken into protective custody by DHS, but have yet to be identified.
At approximately 9:25am today, East Precinct officers responded to a 9-1-1 call about a man hearing children's voices coming from a shed behind his house, in the 7900 block of Southeast Rhine Street. Officers identified a vacant residence as the source of the voices and, while contacting a number of homeless people on the premises, discovered there were three very young children present, all of whom appeared to be under four years of age.
The homeless persons told the officers the children had been abandoned there, the night before, by a woman whom they believed was the children's mother. The children were immediately taken into the protective custody of DHS, and were medically evaluated to check their welfare. DHS is asking for the public's help in identifying the children.
The youngest female child is described as an olive-skinned infant, between approximately 8-15 months old, weighing 15 pounds. She has short black hair and brown eyes, and is showing two front, lower teeth.
The female toddler is described as olive-skinned, approximately 2 years old, 28 pounds, with long black hair and brown eyes.
The male toddler is described as olive-skinned, approximately 3 years old, 28 pounds, with short black hair and brown eyes.
Anyone who has information about the identity of the children, or the circumstances under which they came to be at the vacant residence in Southeast Portland, is asked to contact the DHS Child Abuse Hotline, 24/7, at 503-731-3100.
