On Tuesday June 12, 2012, at 8:47 p.m., Portland Police officers responded to the report of an armed man inside the Fred Meyer store at North Interstate Avenue and Lombard Street.
Officers responded to the store and made contact with Loss Prevention Officers at Fred Meyer who led the police to the security office where they were able to utilize the store's surveillance system to get a close look at the armed suspect.
Based on the the officers observations, they believed the person was likely to be 54-year-old David William Chilton, wanted in connection with an armed bank robbery and carjacking on Monday in Northeast Portland and brandishing a firearm in Southwest Portland.
The Special Emergency Reaction Team (SERT) and Crisis Negotiation Team (CNT) were activated to respond to the scene and began arriving shortly after 9:00 p.m.
Officers were able to maintain visual contact with the suspect as other officers were able to get remaining employees and customers out of the store without alerting the suspect.
At approximately 10:15 p.m., the suspect was taken into custody by SERT officers and a police K-9 unit inside the store. Officers confirmed that the suspect is David William Chilton.
Chilton has been transported to the Detective Division. Officers located the stolen 1997 Toyota 4Runner parked in the area and have recovered the vehicle. Chilton carjacked this vehicle after the bank robbery on Monday afternoon.
Chilton will be booked into the Multnomah County Jail at some point Wednesday morning. Charges have not yet been determined.
