July 07, 2012 15:40On Friday, July 6, 2012 at about 6:13 p.m. a Portland Police Sergeant assigned to the Canine Unit spotted a stolen vehicle traveling westbound on Killingsworth near Portland Highway. The stolen vehicle began a series of turns, attempting to get away from the marked patrol car. The Canine sergeant began pursuing the stolen vehicle, which had one occupant.
The pursuit went eastbound on Northeast Killingsworth but as traffic backed up near Columbia Way at Killingsworth, the suspect vehicle slowed and rear-ended a vehicle in an attempt to get through traffic.
The Canine sergeant was then able to successfully perform the PIT (Pursuit Intervention Technique) on the suspect vehicle bringing it to a stop. Once the vehicle stopped the suspect got out and ran from officers on foot. Officers arrived in the area and established a perimeter. As the perimeter was set up the Police Canine began to search the area slowly and methodically.
A resident called 911 saying the suspect was in their yard in the 9100 block of NE Webster. While contacting the suspect and attempting to take him into custody, the suspect sustained a dog bite to his arm.
Officers took 23-year-old Scott Petersen into custody and transported him the Multnomah County Jail. Petersen was booked on Possession of Methamphetamines, Unauthorized Use of a Motor Vehicle, Possession of a Stolen Vehicle, Attempt to Elude by Vehicle, Attempt to Elude on Foot, Reckless Driving, Reckless Endangering, Fail to Perform the Duties of a Driver (Hit and Run) and a warrant.
Petersen is being held on 35,000 bail.
