On Monday July 9, 2012 at 9:35 p.m., Portland Police officers assigned to Central Precinct responded to the report of a man trying to fight with passersby near Southwest 5th Avenue and Main Street.

Officers arrived in the area and located the man, 23-year-old Justin Robert Hale, who was screaming, flailing his arms, and running down the street after another man.

As the officers contacted Hale, he turned towards one of the officers and began fighting with him. Hale bit the officer on the upper arm on the outside of his uniform. The officer used his Taser to gain control of the violent suspect, but it only had a minor effect. Several other officers arrived and gained control of the suspect and got him into custody.

Officers determined that the man Hale was chasing down the street was his former boyfriend.

Hale's bite did not break the barrier of the uniform shirt or penetrate the officer's skin.

Hale was booked into the Multnomah County Jail on Harassment (Domestic Violence), Attempted Assault of a Public Safety Officer, Resisting Arrest, and Disorderly Conduct in the Second Degree.
