Traffic investigators have issued a citation for Careless Driving to 19-year-old Ashley Mason in connection with this crash. Mason fell asleep at the wheel just prior to striking the two children with her car. Mason showed no signs of impairment to Traffic investigators.
The 5-year-old boy remains in serious condition at a Portland hospital.
Traffic on Southeast Flavel Street has been reopened to all traffic.

On Thursday evening, July 19, 2012, at 5:51 p.m., Portland Police officers assigned to East Precinct responded to the report of a car that struck two small children at Southeast 72nd Avenue and Flavel Street.
Officers and medical personnel arrived and learned that a woman driving a car westbound on Flavel passed two cars on the right shoulder, went up onto the curb and hit a 5-year-old boy and a 18-month-old girl who were waiting to cross the street with their mother. The 18-month-old was in a stroller when she was hit.
The 5-year-old boy has been transported to a Portland hospital with traumatic injuries. The 18-month-old girl suffered non-life-threatening injuries and was treated at the scene by medical personnel.
The driver remained at the scene and Traffic Division officers are investigating the cause of the crash and whether or not alcohol or drugs are a factor.
Southeast Flavel Street is closed to all traffic from 71st to 72nd Streets.
