Gang Enforcement Team detectives are continuing to investigate the circumstances of Friday night's non-injury shooting in the Piedmont Neighborhood.
One of the adults inside the residence was identified 28-year-old Stewart Nathaniel Staples, a resident of the apartment. During a search of his apartment, officers located an SKS assault rifle and 100 rounds of ammunition. Further investigation revealed that the rifle was a reported stolen gun.
Staples was arrested and charged with Felon in Possession of a Firearm, Theft in the First Degree and an unrelated narcotics warrant. Staples was booked into the Multnomah County Jail.
The Felon in Possession case on Staples will be given to the U.S. Attorney's Office for possible federal charges.
Investigators were able to determine that the gun was stolen in this case because the victim maintained and reported the serial number of the guns, which greatly helps in determining ownership of recovered stolen property.
The investigation started on Friday August 3, 2012, at 8:45 p.m., when Portland Police officers assigned to North Precinct and the Gang Enforcement Team responded to the report of gunshots heard in the 1700 block of Northeast Lombard Street.
Officers arrived and located an apartment on the south side of Lombard that appeared to have multiple bullet holes through the front window. Officers checked the apartment for victims but did not find anyone hit by gunfire. The apartment was occupied by several adults.
Investigators believe the shooting is gang-related and there is no suspect information is available at this time to share with the public.
Anyone with information about this shooting investigation is asked to contact Detective Todd Gradwahl at (503) 823-2056 or Todd.Gradwahl@PortlandOregon.gov.
