Investigators from the Portland Police Bureau's Gun Task Force will be charging 31-year-old Michael James Spillers Jr. with theft and gun charges after learning that Spillers hid a stolen handgun when he was fleeing on foot from a stolen car.
On Sunday evening, officers from East Precinct responded to a residence in the 9700 block of Southeast Claybourne Street on a call of a gun found in a washing machine.
Officers responded to the location and recovered a loaded handgun from the washing machine in the garage of the residence.
Today, investigators from the Gun Task Force determined that Spillers had the handgun with him as he ran from firefighters. Spillers put the gun in the washing machine before being caught by firefighters and police.
The gun is a reported stolen gun out of Washington. Investigators were able to determine that the gun was stolen in this case because the victim maintained and reported the serial number of the gun, which greatly helps in determining ownership of recovered stolen property.
Spillers will be charged with Felon in Possession of a Firearm, Theft in the First Degree and Unlawful Possession of a Firearm.
The gun case against Spillers will be given to the U.S. Attorney's Office for possible Federal prosecution.
