The two pedestrians hit in this crash have been identified as 23-year-old Bashkim Abazi and 21-year-old Merita Abazi. The married couple remains in a Portland hospital recovering from injuries. Bashkim remains in serious condition and Merita is in critical condition.

The families of both ask for privacy at this time.

The driver in Thursday night's crash was arrested by investigators for several charges. 50-year-old Michael Allen was arrested and charged with Assault in the Second and Third Degrees, Vehicular Assault of a Pedestrian, Reckless Driving, and DUII.

Allen was booked into the Multnomah County Jail.

Both victims remain in the hospital in critical condition. Their names will not be released until investigators can confirm family notifications have been made.

This evening, Thursday August 30, 2012, at 7:18 p.m., Portland Police officers assigned to East Precinct responded to the report of two pedestrians struck by a car on Southeast Division Street at 142nd Avenue.

Officers arrived and located two adult victims, a male and a female, suffering from traumatic injuries. Medical personnel have transported both to a Portland hospital for treatment.

The driver remained at the scene and is cooperating with the investigation. Preliminary information suggests the driver was traveling westbound on Division and struck both pedestrians who were in a marked crosswalk.

The Portland Police Bureau Traffic Division's Major Crash Team is responding to investigate the crash.
