This evening, Thursday October 11, 2012, at 8:58 p.m., Portland Police officers assigned to Central Precinct responded to the area of Southeast 35th Avenue and Hawthorne Boulevard on the report that a group of 40 people in the parking lot of the Umpqua Bank, located at 3557 Southeast Hawthorne Boulevard, and that someone in the group broke one of the bank windows.
As officers were enroute, additional information was received that the group was walking eastbound on Hawthorne Boulevard and that people in the group broke out the window of the Wells Fargo Bank, located at 3782 Southeast Hawthorne Boulevard.
A third caller to 9-1-1 reported that someone in the group threw a rock through the Chase Bank window, located at 3902 Southeast Hawthorne Boulevard, and that the group numbered somewhere between 50-75 people that were throwing bottles at pedestrians and walking into traffic blocking vehicles.
Additional information was received that people in the group broke windows at the U.S. Bank, located at 1225 Southeast Cesar Chavez Boulevard and the Walgreens Drug Store, located at 940 Southeast Cesar Chavez Boulevard.
The group was last seen walking eastbound on Southeast Belmont Street, then scattered in multiple directions.
Officers did locate several people and briefly detained them but no arrests were made at this time.
The Portland Police Bureau will be contacting the affected businesses to obtain surveillance video to identify suspects in the vandalism spree.
