On Thursday October 25, 2012 a positive identification was made on the unidentified homicide victim who was located in Washington Park on June 26, 2012.
The victim was identified as 15-year-old Mayra Sophia Cruz Rodriguez from San Diego County, California. Homicide detectives learned that Cruz was visiting relatives in Vancouver, Washington when she was reported as a runaway on June 15, 2012. Cruz was reported as a runaway in San Diego County prior to this event.
Portland Police Homicide detectives distributed a sketch of Cruz to the public as well as law enforcement nationwide.
Detective Kevin Schmidt of the Clark County Sheriff's Major Crimes Unit alerted Portland Police Bureau Homicide Detectives after recalling bulletins disseminated to law enforcement agencies. Ultimately, Cruz was identified by dental records, which were confirmed by a Forensic Odontologist associated with the Oregon State Medical Examiner's Office.
Mark Beebout, the defendant in this homicide, as well as the homicide of Nikayla Powell, has been indicted on multiple charges of aggravated murder.
The Portland Police Bureau expresses its gratitude to the multitude of agencies assisting in identifying Mayra Cruz, to include the Oregon State Medical Examiner's Office, the Oregon State Forensic Laboratory, the Clark County Sheriff's Office, the San Diego County Sheriff's Department and several agencies who assisted in distributing information nationwide to thousands of law enforcement entities.
Homicide Detectives are seeking any additional information the public may have regarding Mayra Cruz Rodriguez and/or Mark Beebout.
