UPDATE #3: Portland Police Investigating a Bank Robbery in Downtown Portland

32-Year-Old Steven Wayne Gentry was arrested and booked into the Multnomah County Jail in connection with this afternoons bank robbery in Downtown Portland.

The other two people detained were released and not involved in the robbery.

Gentry was booked on a U.S. Marshal's Hold and will face Federal Bank Robbery Charges.

No firearm has been recovered at this time.

SERT has cleared the apartment. Three people exited the apartment prior to SERT's arrival and have been detained.

The investigation is continuing and the neighborhood perimeter will be clearing shortly. Residents can now safely come and go.

The Special Emergency Reaction Team (SERT) and the Crisis Negotiation Team (CNT) has been activated as police believe the armed bank robbery suspect is in a room at 1115 Southwest 11th Avenue.

The neighborhood from 10th to 12th, Main to Madison is closed to all traffic. Residents in the area should shelter in place until this situation is resolved.

This afternoon, Thursday November 8, 2012, at 4:00 p.m., Portland Police officers assigned to Central Precinct responded to the report of a bank robbery at the Wells Fargo branch, located at 1900 Southwest 5th Avenue.

Officers responded to the location and contacted bank employees who told police that the suspect was armed with a handgun and demanded money. After receiving an undisclosed amount of money, the suspect fled the bank and was last seen westbound through Downtown Portland.

Officers are currently checking the area around I-405 and Highway 26, west of Portland State University.

The suspect is described as a white male, 28 to 32 years old, 6'1" to 6"2" tall, slender build, scruffy facial hair, long black stringy hair, black baseball cap, black oversized jacket, and possibly had a black eye. The suspect was armed with a handgun.

Anyone seeing this suspect is asked not to approach him but to immediately call 9-1-1.
