June 19, 2013 10:25On June 14, 2013, Gang Enforcement Team detectives arrested 19-year-old Rasool Islam in connection with the June 13 shooting at 148th Avenue and East Burnside that injured 19-year-old Amel Johnson.
Both Islam and Johnson are known gang associates.
Gang Enforcement Team detectives developed probable cause to arrest Islam for the shooting and began to conduct surveillance at his suspected residence in the 5300 block of Southeast 136th Avenue. Officers watched Islam leave the residence and followed him until members of the Special Emergency Reaction Team (SERT) were able to stop his car and take him into custody at Northeast 61st Avenue and Fremont Street.
SERT then served a search warrant at Islam's residence to assist Gang detectives.
Islam was booked into the Multnomah County Jail on an outstanding warrant.
Today, Islam will be arraigned on charges of Attempted Murder, Assault in the Second Degree, Unlawful Use of a Weapon, and Felon in Possession of a Firearm.
The Portland Police Bureau Gang Enforcement Team and Gun Task Force are continuing to actively investigate gang and gun crimes in the City of Portland. Anyone with information about gang and/or illegal gun crimes in the City of Portland is encouraged to provide information to the Portland Police Bureau.
