The driver killed in yesterday afternoon's single vehicle crash on Southeast 110th Drive has been identified as 50-year-old Jon Pierce Wright of Vancouver, Washington.

The Major Crash Team has performed a preliminary investigation and learned that the commercial pumper truck was being driven northbound on 112th Avenue from Mount Scott. This is a very steep, downhill roadway. Witnesses told police that it appeared that the driver could not slow down as the truck was going down the hill towards Foster Road.

Just prior to the bridge over Johnson Creek, the driver lost control of the truck and it drove off the East side of the roadway right after crossing the bridge. The truck crashed through a guardrail and the vehicle continued approximately 120 feet before crashing into the embankment. The 60,000 pound gross vehicle weight vehicle struck hard enough to disconnect the attached tank holding the mud sludge.

Portland Fire & Rescue initially responded and confirmed the driver was deceased in the cab. Firefighters returned later and extricated Mr. Wright from the cab of the truck, prior to removal of the truck from the brush.

Firefighter remained at the scene to assist the crane company with the lifting of the vehicle, which took several hours overnight.

The Multnomah County Sheriff's Office Search and Rescue Team responded to assist with an area check for any additional victims that may have been struck by the truck and thrown from the roadway. On initial investigation, officers located a pair of dress shoes that appeared out of place on the side of the roadway, which led to the concern about a possible second victim.

MCSO SAR and Portland Fire & Rescue checked the murky water and surrounding wooded and brush areas using dogs and FLIR but did not locate any additional victims and found no indication that any additional victims were involved in the crash.

After removing the truck, the Portland Bureau of Environmental Services responded to assist with vehicle fluid clean-up.

The cause of the crash remains under investigation and police would like to hear from any additional witnesses.

Anyone with information should contact Officer Peter Kurronen at (503) 823-2208 or Peter.Kurronen@PortlandOregon.gov.
