The investigation into the fatal crash at Southeast 148th Avenue and Division Street is continuing. The bus driver, 55-year-old Billie Jean Neel of Gladstone, has been issued traffic citations for Careless Driving Causing Death to a Vulnerable Road User and Fail to Yield to Pedestrians in a Crosswalk (two counts).

The woman who died this afternoon has been identified as 41-year-old Renee Jean Bates. Her husband, 41-year-old Shawn Dale Bates, was also hit by the school bus but did not require any medical attention. They are residents of the Southeast Portland neighborhood where the crash occurred.

The driver, 55-year-old Billie Jean Neel of Gladstone, remained at the scene and has fully cooperated with investigators. Neel was not impaired at the time of the crash.

The crash is still under investigation and no citations have been issued at this time.

The woman struck by the bus this afternoon has died. Traffic officers are continuing to investigate the circumstances of the crash.

The Traffic Division's Major Crash Team is now responding to the crash scene at Southeast 148th Avenue and Division Street. Traffic may be affected during the investigation although presently traffic is moving through the area.

The woman struck by the bus is suffering from life-threatening injuries.

This afternoon, Tuesday July 9, 2013, at 1:08 p.m., East Precinct officers responded to the report of pedestrian struck by a school bus on Southeast 148th Avenue at Division Street.

Officers and medical personnel arrived and located the female adult victim suffering from traumatic injuries. She has been transported to a Portland hospital for treatment. Her husband was also struck by did not require any medical attention.

Preliminary information indicates that the two pedestrians were walking in the crosswalk eastbound from the NW corner of the intersection when the school bus ran into them in the right-turn only lane.

The school bus belongs to the West Linn School District and was carrying two children who were not injured. The bus operator remained at the scene and is cooperating with the investigation.

No additional details are available at this time.
